Railways to Equip 74,000 Coaches with CCTV Cameras for Passenger Safety

New Delhi 21st July 2025: To enhance passenger convenience and safety, Indian Railways will install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 coaches. Additionally, around 15,000 locomotives will also be equipped with similar cameras. This initiative is aimed at significantly improving passenger security.

Passengers often face issues like theft and harassment by anti-social elements during train journeys. With CCTV surveillance, the Railways intends to take strict action against such individuals. The cameras will be installed near passenger movement areas and coach doors.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Raunith Singh Bittu have reviewed the plan to implement CCTV installation in both train coaches and engines. Senior officials of the Railway Board were also present during this review.

Project Approved by the Railway Minister

Following successful pilot testing of CCTV in coaches and engines, the Railway Minister has approved full-scale implementation across 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives.

Each coach will be fitted with four dome-shaped CCTV cameras, with two placed near each entry point. Similarly, each locomotive will have six CCTV cameras, installed at the front, rear, and on both sides of the engine. One camera will be placed in each cabin for loco pilots, along with two disk-mounted microphones.

Advanced, Certified Technology

The CCTV cameras will be STQC certified and based on the latest technology. They will be capable of capturing high-quality images even at speeds over 100 km/h and in low-light conditions. Cameras will be placed only in common areas near doors, keeping passenger privacy in mind. The quality of footage and data security will not be compromised.

Indian Railways will implement this project in collaboration with the AI Mission of India. AI will be used to analyze CCTV data, helping to detect and prevent suspicious activities. The Railway Minister has emphasized the use of world-class technology in this area.

This CCTV surveillance program is part of Indian Railways’ modernization efforts and is being undertaken with a focus on safety, advancement, and meeting the expectations of modern passengers, said Minister Vaishnaw.
