Nabarangpur: A demand has been raised to make the Nabarangpur District Labor Office free from the influence of middlemen. In this regard, a memorandum has been submitted to the Labor Commissioner, District Collector of Nabarangpur, Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi, Nabarangpur MLA Gaurishankar Majhi, and Odisha Welfare Board member Laxman Das. The demand was made by organizations under the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, including the Odisha Agricultural and Rural Labor Union, Odisha Construction and Building Workers’ Union, and Vishwakarma Labor Union.
Background of the Issue:
On September 4, 2014, a written request was submitted to the Nabarangpur Divisional Labor Commissioner by these unions, demanding the elimination of middlemen from the labor department. Despite assurances and written commitments to involve all labor organizations in this process, the situation remains unchanged.
Recently, it was reported in Dharitri on the 28th that 101 fake death certificates and succession certificates were used for online registration to claim insurance amounts. Concerns have been raised about whether the Labor Department can provide death assistance funds to the families of individuals who are still alive but falsely declared dead in official records.
Key Allegations:
Issuance of Labor Identity Cards to Deceased Individuals:
The Odisha Construction and Building Workers’ Union has demanded an investigation into this matter. It has been alleged that a departmental officer in Papadahandi is involved with middlemen, raising concerns about the transparency of issuing new labor cards.
Fake Registrations After Death:
A laborer who passed away in 2023 was registered with the Labor Department in 2024 using a fraudulent death certificate for online processing. The District Labor Officer investigated the matter and canceled the online application. However, questions remain about how a person who died in 2023 could be shown as alive in official records during the investigation process.
Demand for Investigation and Action:
The labor unions have questioned the authenticity of the investigation and demanded strict action against those involved. The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh has warned that if appropriate measures are not taken, they will resort to protests and agitation to ensure justice. Translate in English
