West Bengal, 29th Aug 2025: During his visit to West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three metro lines in Kolkata by flagging them off.
Metro service in Kolkata first began in 1984, and now with this expansion, the Green, Yellow, and Orange lines have been introduced.
Notably, the 6.77 km Yellow Line up to the airport has been made operational, providing direct connectivity between the airport and the city’s metro network. Earlier, it used to take around one hour to reach the airport, but now the journey can be completed in just a few minutes.
The new metro connectivity will significantly ease travel between Howrah, Sealdah, the airport, and key parts of Kolkata.
Prime Minister Modi also travelled with metro workers during the inaugural ride. Reports suggest that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not attend the programme.
