PM Modi Conferred Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III by Cyprus President

Nicosia:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday conferred with Cyprus’ highest civilian award, the “Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III”, by the government of Cyprus.

21st International Honour for Modi

After his visit to Cyprus, PM Modi proceeded to Canada and is scheduled to attend the G7 Summit. The award was presented to him at a grand ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia by President Nikos Christodoulides.

Modi arrived in Cyprus on Sunday for a two-day official visit. On Monday, he concluded his visit and departed for Canada.

In his acceptance speech, PM Modi said:

> “I sincerely thank the people and government of Cyprus. This award is not just for Narendra Modi but for 1.4 billion Indians. It is a recognition of their capabilities and aspirations. It reflects the values of our culture, harmony, and the vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family).”

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Modi emphasized that both India and Cyprus respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that their relations are not bound by circumstances, but are built on shared democratic values and mutual respect.

He and President Christodoulides jointly addressed the media and discussed bilateral relations, India–EU ties, and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. Cyprus, the President affirmed, stands with India in its fight against terrorism.

Grand Welcome and Diplomatic Talks

Earlier, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace in Cyprus. Following the welcome, Modi and President Nikos held bilateral discussions in the presence of delegates from both countries, with a focus on strengthening the partnership.

Narendra Modi is the third Indian Prime Minister to visit Cyprus, after Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. With this latest recognition from Cyprus, Modi has now received the highest civilian honours from 21 countries.
