Chandrasekharpur, 10th Oct 2025:  “Sir, my child is unwell. She can’t play like before. If you treat her, she will run again – from this square to the next. She’ll come running to me happily. Please take her to the doctor, bring medicine and heal her.”

This was not the heartfelt plea of a human mother, but the unspoken desperation of a mother cow named Bhola, for her injured calf, Kunu, who could not speak for herself. This deeply emotional scene unfolded near the Sai Temple in Sailashree Vihar, where Bhola pleaded with a passerby – not in words, but through visible distress and tears in her eyes.

The Accident

According to eyewitnesses, five days ago, Bhola and her calf Kunu were resting by the roadside near Kailash Vihar, not far from Sai Mandir Square. Suddenly, a young man performing stunts on a speeding bike hit the calf, injuring her badly. Kunu’s right leg was broken. Despite Bhola’s efforts, Kunu could neither stand nor lift her head.

Helpless and in pain, Bhola lay beside her calf, shedding silent tears, refusing to move away — perhaps fearing what might happen next to her little one.

A Timely Intervention

At that moment, Rakesh Mallick, a local gossevak (cow caretaker), happened to be returning from treating an injured bull near the Sai temple. As his bike approached, Bhola came running and blocked his path, crying out desperately.

Sensing something was wrong, Rakesh followed Bhola to find Kunu lying helplessly on the ground. Without wasting time, he began treating the calf immediately. Since it was raining, with help from local residents, Kunu was moved to a nearby garage in front of the temple. The garage owner, Ghana Ojha, even built a temporary shelter for her using a plastic tarp.

Rakesh continued to treat Kunu every day, and thanks to his dedicated care, she began recovering, eventually standing up again. Even now, her treatment continues. She has also started drinking her mother’s milk again.

Witnesses saw the mother cow Bhola licking Rakesh’s hands in gratitude, a powerful expression of emotion that needed no translation.

A Gossevak’s Reflection

Rakesh shared:

> “I take care of many cows every day, but I’ve never seen anything like this before. This experience has given me a new kind of joy in serving animals.”

A young calf injured in a road accident was saved not by luck, but by the mother cow’s love and the compassion of a dedicated animal caretaker. This touching story reminds us that motherhood transcends species, and that kindness to animals can heal hearts — both theirs and ours.
