Jeypore, The absence of doctors in the orthopedic department at the district headquarters hospital has sparked tension. Patients stood in line for nearly three hours, but as no doctor was available for consultation, frustration grew among them. A scuffle ensued, prompting hospital authorities to intervene and pacify the situation.
On Monday morning at 8 AM, patients registered for consultation with the orthopedic specialist and waited outside the designated chamber. However, even after waiting until 11 AM, no doctor arrived. Finally, the hospital administration informed the patients that the orthopedic specialist was unavailable. This led to patients and their relatives expressing their anger, arguing that they should not have been made to wait unnecessarily. The tense situation lasted for some time, but after negotiations by the authorities, the patients eventually left.
Upon inquiry, District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr. Durgaprasad Patra stated that orthopedic specialist Dr. Ajit Kumar Dash had applied for leave due to sudden illness and was unable to attend to patients. As a result, no orthopedic consultations could be provided that day.
Shortage of Specialists in the Hospital
The hospital authorities acknowledged the issue, stating that only one orthopedic specialist has been appointed for the district headquarters hospital. Despite repeated demands, vacant doctor positions have not been filled, forcing a single specialist to handle all cases. When this doctor is on leave or unwell, the entire department becomes non-functional, leading to disruptions in patient care.
Hospital Expansion but Lack of Doctors
Following the inauguration of the new hospital block, efforts are being made to provide quality healthcare services. The new block is air-conditioned and equipped with modern medical instruments. Separate consultation rooms have been arranged for male and female patients, along with facilities for specialist consultations.
However, despite these improvements, the district headquarters hospital still lacks sufficient doctors, causing patients to be deprived of medical services. Due to the shortage of necessary equipment and specialists, most patients receive only primary treatment before being referred elsewhere. Concerned citizens have demanded that essential medical equipment and required specialists be provided to ensure proper healthcare services.
