Baipariguda, Sadhu Mundari, a disable person from Pipalguda village under Chandrapada Panchayat in Baipariguda block, has become self-reliant by driving an auto-rickshaw, turning into an inspiration for others.
Sadhu was affected by polio in his childhood, which left one of his legs immobile. However, his self-confidence has made him self-sufficient. Although he managed to complete his primary education with the help of a walking stick, he couldn’t continue his studies further due to financial constraints. His physical disability posed a challenge to finding employment.
Determined to overcome these barriers, Sadhu gradually learned to ride a two-wheeled bicycle. Due to his immobile left leg, applying brakes and balancing the cycle was difficult. To manage, he used a long stick for support while braking and maintaining balance.
Now, Sadhu has moved beyond cycling and drives an auto-rickshaw, which was provided to him by the State Social Security Department in January. He drives the auto himself, earning a daily income of around 300–400 rupees from passenger fares. Despite his progress, he has not abandoned the walking stick he used since childhood, as it helps him get in and out of the auto with ease.
Interestingly, Sadhu’s story was featured 20 years ago in Dharitri under the column “Eh Bharatare Stambha”. He also receives a monthly disability pension of 1,200 rupees. Sadhu’s unwavering self-confidence continues to serve as an inspiration to many.
