Bhubaneswar: In the past two years, government schools in Odisha have shown significant improvement in student enrollment and learning outcomes. For the academic years 2022–23 and 2023–24, the Performance Grading Index (PGI) report released by the Union Ministry of Education has ranked Odisha among the top five performing states in the school education sector.

Odisha has demonstrated remarkable progress in school education for 2023–24.

No state or union territory has scored in the topmost “Daksh” (Excellent) grade (score: 941–1000), nor in the “Utkarsh”, “Ati Uttam”, or “Uttam” grades. Chandigarh is the only region to fall in the “Prachesta-1” grade (score: 701–760). Odisha, along with nine other states, has been placed in the “Prachesta-3” grade.

District-Level Ranking:

At the district level, Jharsuguda ranked highest in Odisha, while Rayagada was placed near the bottom.

The grading system in the PGI includes 10 categories:

Daksh (Top)

Prachesta (Intermediate levels 1, 2, 3)

Akankshi (Lowest)

These reflect a state’s relative performance in school education across access, infrastructure, equity, and outcomes.
