Bhubaneswar, 15th July 2025 : If a severely injured person in a road accident is rescued and taken to the hospital, instead of Rs2,000, a reward of Rs 25,000  will now be given. Citizens who take up this responsible task will be honored as “Raksha Veer” (Road Heroes). The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, has issued this guideline, and the Transport Department of Odisha has instructed all District Collectors to follow it.

According to Transport Secretary Usha Padhee, who informed the district collectors through a letter, if a seriously injured person is taken to the hospital within the first hour of the accident — known as the Golden Hour — the chances of saving their life increase significantly. To encourage public participation, the Government has introduced the Good Samaritan Policy. As per the Centre’s decision, such rescuers will now be officially referred to as “Raksha Veer”.

Earlier, people who rescued accident victims used to receive Rs 2,000 and a certificate through the RTOs. That amount has now been increased to Rs 25,000. If multiple persons rescue an injured victim, the reward amount will be distributed equally among them.

The Transport Department has sent a direc tive to all District Collectors, instructing that rescuers be addressed as Raksha Veer. A district-level sub-committee has also been formed under the chairmanship of the District Collector to determine the eligibility of rescuers. The details of the rescuers will be uploaded on the designated portal, and the reward will be given within 7 days of that upload.

In addition, at the national level, 10 “Raksha Veers” will be selected annually and awarded financial rewards of up to ₹1 lakh each.
