New Delhi: The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance to several important power generation projects in the country, including two in Odisha. Among the approved projects are those by the state-run NLC India Ltd and GMR Power, a private sector company.
The second phase of NLC India’s Talimela Thermal Power Project, with a capacity of 800 megawatts (MW), has received environmental clearance. The total proposed capacity of the Talabira project is 2400 MW, and with this second phase expansion, the total generation capacity will increase to 3200 MW. The project is located close to a coal mine and includes the installation of ultra-supercritical thermal power units in this phase.
The Talabira expansion project has been awarded to one of the key state-run enterprises for establishing the thermal power plant. Similarly, the GMR Group’s proposal to expand its existing power generation capacity has also received environmental clearance. The current generation capacity of GMR Power in Odisha is 1050 MW, and the company plans to add an additional 350 MW, for which it had applied for environmental clearance.
NLC India and GMR Power had submitted applications for their respective expansions. Notably, GMR plans to use imported coal in this project.
During the EAC meeting held on June 20, the committee also discussed a proposed 800 MW expansion of NTPC Limited’s Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project in Odisha. However, the committee returned the proposal to the company, recommending that it revise the Terms of Reference (ToR) and reapply with the necessary changes.
