Bhubaneswar, 8th Aug 2025: The Odisha government has made it mandatory for all shops and commercial establishments located in urban areas of the state to display signboards in Odia script.
In an official directive issued by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, all establishments under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Notified Area Councils (NACs) must comply within 55 days.
As per the new rule:
- At least 60% of the signboard’s space must be in Odia script.
- Those who fail to comply will first receive a formal notice and will be given 55 days to rectify.
- After that period, violators will face a fine of ₹500 per day.
- On the other hand, businesses that comply with the rule will be rewarded with a 5% rebate on trade license renewal fees. This incentive will be available through the sujo.gov.in or bhubaneswar.me portals.
- Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been instructed to ensure compliance during trade license renewals and regular inspections. The implementation of this regulation is expected to be fully completed by September 30, 2025.
