Bhubaneswar  A severe heatwave continues to grip the state, with temperatures in most districts rising above 40 degrees Celsius. Amid this intense heat, frequent power cuts have become a major concern for the people. This is not just a problem of the current year—every summer brings similar issues, causing public dissatisfaction due to electricity outages. Given the current extreme heat conditions disrupting daily life, Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo has directed officials not to carry out power cuts.

Responding to the media, the Deputy Chief Minister assured that there would be no power cuts in the state. He stated that no one’s electricity will be disconnected during the heatwave, even if bills are unpaid. However, consumers will still be required to pay their pending bills. He had previously announced in the Legislative Assembly that power supply will not be cut off until June, even if bills remain unpaid.

If any area experiences power outages due to storms or technical issues, efforts are being made for immediate restoration. Compared to earlier, the electricity supply is now being better managed. In areas where maintenance work is ongoing, prior information is being shared with the public. People are being informed about the timing and reasons for the power cuts.

In cases of disrupted services, quick resolutions are being ensured. The government never intends to impose intentional power cuts, as electricity services generate revenue for the state, said the Deputy Chief Minister.

Notably, after the recent nor’wester (Kalbaisakhi), the heat has intensified again. Stepping out during the daytime has become difficult for people, and staying indoors is also uncomfortable due to the sweltering conditions. As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, temperatures had crossed 42 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state. Jharsuguda recorded 49.6°C, followed by Hirakud at 40°C, Sambalpur at 40.7°C, and Rourkela at 39°C. Other readings included Kendujhar at 36.8°C, Chandbali at 36.4°C, and Bhubaneswar at 35.4°C by 11 a.m.
