Bhubaneswar, 1st Aug 2025: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified that the Paika Rebellion has not been removed from the Class 8 Social Science textbook. The topic will be included in the second volume of the textbook, which is scheduled to be published between September and October this year.

This second volume will feature topics related to regional resistance movements and armed uprisings, including the Paika Rebellion of Odisha, the Khordha Rebellion, the Kuka Movement of Punjab, and Sikh revolts. NCERT confirmed that these important historical events have been incorporated and the second volume is currently in its final stage of preparation.

Previously, there was public concern and debate after it was noted that the Paika Rebellion was not found in the first volume of the new Class 8 Social Science textbook titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond”, under the chapter “Colonial Era in India”. Responding to this, NCERT issued a press statement clarifying the situation.

The organization emphasized that the currently published textbook is only the first volume, and that the second volume—to be released between September and October—will include all significant historical events and movements in a structured and comprehensive way.

The Paika Rebellion of Odisha will be discussed in detail, and students will gain deeper knowledge of India’s rich historical legacy and cultural diversity, NCERT assured.
