Nationwide Preparations Begin for Special Summary Revision (SSR) of Electoral Rolls

Bhubaneswar, 30th Oct 2025, Following Bihar, preparations are underway across the country for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun a two-day conference with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) on Wednesday at the India International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi.

Odisha’s Chief Electoral Officer R.S. Gopalan, Additional CEO Sushant Mishra, and Deputy CEO Lakshmiprasad Sahu are among the participants. The conference, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, was attended by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, who shared their well-considered views.

During the meeting, the ECI reviewed the readiness of the offices of CEOs from various states and Union Territories for the upcoming Special Summary Revision (SSR) process. The conference was organized in continuation of the preparatory meeting for SSR held on September 10.

Two-Day CEOs’ Conference in New Delhi

At the meeting, detailed presentations were made regarding the number of voters in states and Union Territories as per the previous SSR, the qualifying date for the last SSR, and the current status of the electoral rolls. The Commission also evaluated the progress made on its earlier instructions to CEOs for mapping the current voter lists with the previous rolls.

In addition, the ECI reviewed the status of appointment and training of District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, Booth-Level Officers (BLOs), and Booth-Level Agents (BLAs).

With the Annual Intensive Revision (AIR) in Bihar completed ahead of its Assembly elections, the upcoming Special Summary Revision (SSR) is expected to play a crucial role in preparing for the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
