National Handloom Day Highlights India’s Rich Textile Tradition

Puri, 16th Aug 2025: National Handloom Day was celebrated at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. Hon’ble Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended the event as the chief guest and inaugurated the programme. All districts of the state were connected to the event through an online platform.16th Aug 2025:

Accordingly, in Malkangiri, a district-level programme was organised at Oswan Hall of the District Collector’s Office, under the direction of District Collector Somesh Upadhyay. Additional District Magistrate (General) Somanath Pradhan attended the programme along with Additional District Magistrate (Revenue) Bedabar Pradhan, District Information & Public Relations Officer Pramila Majhi, Additional Handicrafts Officer Gurucharan, Deputy Collector Jagajiban Choudhury, Deputy Collector Sudhakar Rait, DGM Subhashis Pattnayak, and Assistant District Magistrate Muna Turuk, as well as other staff members of the District Collector’s Office.

It may be noted that the Government of India declared August 7, 2015, as National Handloom Day. On this date in 1905, the Swadeshi Movement was launched with the objective of boycotting foreign textiles and promoting the use of traditional handloom fabrics. Through their traditional weaving techniques, weavers have been preserving cultural heritage. National Handloom Day is celebrated to encourage weavers, promote the wearing of handloom fabrics, and increase their acceptance and appreciation among the public.
