A tragic fire incident at a hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, has claimed the lives of ten patients, triggering grief and concern across the country. The fire broke out in the Intensive Care Unit of the Trauma Care Centre at SCB Medical College and Hospital, one of the state’s largest government hospitals.
The incident has drawn condolences from several national and state leaders, including Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, and Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister. Both leaders expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended their sympathies to the bereaved families.
President Murmu said she was deeply distressed by the tragic loss of life and offered her heartfelt condolences to the affected families. She also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
Prime Minister Modi described the incident as deeply painful and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased patient from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, while those injured in the fire will receive ₹50,000 as support.
Several other leaders also expressed grief over the tragedy. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Governor of Odisha, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister, and Naveen Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition in the state, conveyed their condolences and called for support for the affected families.
Authorities have begun investigating the cause of the fire while hospital staff and emergency teams worked quickly to control the situation and evacuate patients. The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of strong fire safety systems in healthcare institutions, especially in critical care units.
As the state mourns the loss of lives, the focus now shifts to supporting the victims’ families and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future. The tragedy has left a deep mark on the community, reminding everyone of the importance of safety in places meant to heal and protect lives.
