Nimbahali,1st Nov 2025: Whether human or animal, a mother never abandons her child in times of danger. She will risk her own life to ensure her offspring’s safety. A striking example of this was witnessed in Khadagaprasad village of Meramandali section, Dhenkanal. A mother elephant worked tirelessly for nearly one and a half hours to rescue her calf that had fallen into a broken well.
According to reports, around 40 wild elephants frequently roam the Khadagaprasad area. The herd usually stays in the forest near the Lanko Plant but wanders into nearby farmland at night, sometimes causing crop damage. On Wednesday night, the herd was seen roaming in the areas of Teepal, Kurundi, and Khadagaprasad.
Early in the morning, one elephant calf fell into an open well near a local temple in Sad Sad village. The mother elephant, returning from the forest, stayed nearby, keeping watch over her trapped calf. As dawn broke, the mother elephant began breaking the well to rescue her calf. Villagers gathered to watch as the elephant worked.
Observing the mother elephant breaking the well, the villagers suspected an accident and alerted forest officials. By the time the officials arrived, the mother elephant was still attempting to rescue the calf. Using her trunk, she tried to lift the trapped calf. After a long effort of about one and a half hours, she broke half of the well and lifted the calf safely with her trunk.
