Modi Unveils Initiative to Strengthen Odisha’s Semiconductor Industry

New Delhi, 23rd Aug 2025: At the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approval was granted for four semiconductor manufacturing units in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh with a total investment of Rs4,600 crore.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan welcomed the decision and said:

Under the India Semiconductor Mission, a compound semiconductor fab and ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging) unit will be set up in Bhubaneswar.

This unit will produce silicon carbide semiconductors.

Its R&D lab will be established within the IIT Bhubaneswar research campus.

The Research Park at IIT Bhubaneswar will provide academic and research support to this semiconductor unit.

Secondly, a display glass unit is proposed at Info Valley, Khordha.

Financial Support

For the Bhubaneswar semiconductor unit:

Centre: ~Rs700 crore

Odisha Govt: ~Rs350 crore

For the Khordha unit:

Centre: ~Rs800 crore

Odisha Govt: ~Rs400 crore

Together, the double-engine government (Centre + State) will provide around Rs2,250 crore for these projects.

The Odisha Government will also extend full support in terms of land, water, power supply, and related infrastructure.

Employment Impact

According to Minister Pradhan, the two units will generate around 1,500 direct jobs and thousands of indirect employment opportunities in Odisha.
