Bhubaneswar, 23rd Aug 2025: The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has produced a short film on three of the country’s most prominent natural sarees. Among them, the Mirigan saree of Kotpad in Koraput district has found a place.
The film, made for promotion and publicity by the Ministry, first showcases Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram saree, then Odisha’s Koraput district’s Kotpad Mirigan saree, followed by Gujarat’s Tangaliya saree.
The Mirigan saree of Kotpad is made using yarn extracted from the Mirigan barks collected from forests. The weavers prepare the yarn through indigenous techniques. Using organic dyes made from natural sources, along with soil and water, different shades of threads are created. No machines or chemicals are used in this process.
The weaving technique of the Mirigan saree, practiced by Prahallad and his team from Jotpad area, has been given prominence in this film by the Ministry of Textiles.
The Kotpad Mirigan saree is considered a natural gift of culture, rhythm, and devotion. It is also described as a symbol of the nation’s pride and honor. Truly, the organic Mirigan saree of Kotpad is a priceless handloom art, and it is a matter of immense pride for all.
