MIGDHA Launches Eco-Friendly Herbal Colors for a Safe and Vibrant Holi

Rayagada: To promote an eco-friendly and sustainable celebration, the Horticulture and Agriculture Department of MITU Institute of Professional Studies, Rayagada, has prepared herbal colors for Holi. These environmentally friendly colors were innovatively created by sixth-semester biotechnology students as part of their curriculum on post-harvest management, fruit and vegetable value addition. The initiative highlights the importance of using natural, skin-safe, and non-toxic alternatives instead of synthetic colors.

Under the guidance of experts Dr. Tanmoy Mondal, Dr. Gargi J. Padhari, and Ms. Arpita Nag, students prepared herbal gulal using easily available plant-based ingredients. They extracted red color from beetroot, green from spinach, orange from marigold flowers, yellow from banana powder, and pink from bougainvillea bracts.

This eco-friendly approach not only reduces the harmful effects of synthetic colors on skin and the environment but also promotes the use of agricultural products in value-added production. It aligns with the goals of sustainable agriculture and rural entrepreneurship, said Dr. Tanmoy Mondal.

During an open exhibition, faculty members and students showcased their vibrant creations, receiving appreciation from peers and visitors. This initiative served as a memorable reminder of how traditional festivals can be celebrated responsibly without harming health or nature.

MITU Institute continues to inspire innovation and sustainability through its academic programs and practical applications. The herbal Holi initiative is a shining example of how an educational institution can meaningfully contribute to cultural traditions while promoting a safe, green, and joyful Holi celebration.
