Mass Recruitment: Odisha Plans to Hire 44,000 Educators for NEP‑2020 Implementation

Bhubaneswar,5th Aug 2025: In a major step towards implementing the National Education Policy 2020, the Odisha government has approved a large-scale recruitment of teachers to address vacancies in primary schools and to regularize existing junior teachers (contractual). As per the latest official notification based on the April meeting chaired by the School and Mass Education Secretary, a total of 44,433 teachers will be appointed across the state.

Key Highlights:

  • Currently, there is a requirement of 1,99,685 teachers across 45,292 schools in Odisha.
  • Of this, 39,366 posts are lying vacant.
  • An additional 5,067 teachers will be required by December 2025 due to the expansion of pre-primary (Shishu Vatika) in primary schools.
  • The recruitment plan aligns with the government’s vision to realize a “Developed Odisha by 2036.”
  • Multilingual Education Boost:
  • The state plans to expand multilingual education from 17 to all districts.
  • Teachers will be recruited in 21 tribal languages.

In the first phase, 10,000 multilingual teachers will be appointed under the supervision of OSEPA (Odisha School Education Programme Authority).

Special Appointments:

  • Over the next two years, 4,160 independent teachers will be hired.
  • Of these, 1,264 teachers will be appointed in 2025–26, and another 2,896 in the following academic year.
  • The meeting also addressed several issues related to OSEPA employees and accepted proposals for resolution.
  • This massive recruitment drive is expected to bridge the teacher shortage, support early childhood education, and strengthen inclusive, language-friendly education across Odisha.
