Malkangiri, 19th Nov 2025:   This year, the impact of the winter season is being strongly felt in Malkangiri. Since the onset of winter, evenings in the district have become increasingly chilly, prompting villagers and city residents to light fires to protect themselves from the cold. The mercury has dropped to 15°C over the past four days, marking the first signs of winter in the entire Malkangiri district.

Since early morning, the streets of Malkangiri town have appeared almost deserted due to the severe cold. People’s hands and feet have turned numb, and children can be seen warming themselves near wooden fires. Normally, the district experiences temperatures around 30–32°C at this time of year, and residents rarely wear jackets or warm clothing during the day. However, with temperatures dropping to 15°C this morning, people had to bundle up in jackets to continue their daily activities.

Shops and markets opened late, around 9 a.m., due to the chilly weather. As winter sets in across the district, poor tribal families who lack adequate warm clothing have been observed sitting around large fires in front of their homes to keep warm. Many have resorted to using wood to protect themselves from the cold.

In response to this situation, there are demands for the district administration to provide winter clothing to the underprivileged. The cold wave has also prompted traders to set up stalls selling winter apparel. Particularly, traders have brought winter clothing from far-off places such as Uttar Pradesh and Raipur, including jackets, shawls, blankets, sweaters, mufflers, and caps. Customers can be seen flocking to buy their preferred winter gear.
