Jeypore, 5th Nov 2025:The Kolab Canal network will soon become stronger and more efficient. The damaged embankments, canals, and structures will be repaired and concretized. Restoration work will be carried out on about 57 km of main canals, distributaries, minors, and damaged structures, at an estimated cost of ₹29.65 crore. The Odisha Construction Corporation Limited (OCCL) has invited tenders for the work. The Water Resources Department aims to complete the project before the Rabi irrigation season.
Currently, the condition of the main canal, distributaries, minors, and sub-minors is poor. In several places, the canal banks have eroded, and in others, the soil has collapsed. The control structures used to regulate water flow are in a deteriorated condition, causing leakage and water wastage. Water released into the canals is not reaching the tail end within the scheduled time due to seepage and structural damage.
Because of this unnecessary water loss, many farmers’ fields are not getting sufficient irrigation. For the past few years, breaches in the canal have led to flooding of agricultural land, sparking dissatisfaction among local residents. Although the Water Resources Department carries out minor repairs before the Kharif and Rabi irrigation seasons every year, the problem of water wastage persists. Hence, the department has now decided to take up comprehensive canal strengthening, restoration, inner cement concreting, structure repair, and necessary extensions. OCCL has accordingly invited tenders for 13 separate works, totaling Rs29.65 crore.
Online tender applications will be accepted from 3:30 p.m. on August 29 until 5:30 p.m. on September 18. The tenders will be opened at noon on September 19.
