Koraput: In a strong protest demanding a liquor ban, a large group of Self-Help Group (SHG) women surrounded Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Verma in Koraput. Despite repeated complaints to the Excise Department about the rampant sale of both country-made and foreign liquor in villages, no effective action has been taken. This inaction has led to growing frustration among the SHG women, prompting them to confront the SP directly.
The protest took place in Tankua Panchayat of Jeypore Block, where liquor is allegedly being sold openly in almost every household. Locals have made multiple complaints to the authorities, but no substantial measures have been implemented to curb the illegal sale of alcohol. This failure to act has forced hundreds of SHG women from different groups to rally and demand immediate action.
The protesting women claimed that the widespread availability of both country-made and foreign liquor has led to increasing alcohol addiction among people
