Lakshmipur MLA, Koraput MP Demand Shutdown of Illegal Liquor Shops

Jeypore: A press conference was organized by Lakshmipur MLA Pabitra Sounta and Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka demanding the closure of illegal country-made and foreign liquor shops. Both leaders strongly criticized the state government, accusing it of promoting alcohol consumption under the guise of business.

Koraput MP Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka questioned the ruling BJP government, saying:

> “The previous government had opened liquor shops, and now the government itself is making people addicted to alcohol. During elections, BJP had promised a complete ban on liquor in Odisha. Where has that promise gone?”

He further said:

> “Liquor is now being sold near roads, temples, schools, and colleges. Spurious (fake) liquor is being manufactured and supplied to villages. Families are being destroyed after consuming such liquor. Many women have become widows at a young age. People are selling their paddy, rice, and even gold ornaments to buy liquor.”

In Lakshmipur, children are drinking liquor instead of going to school and are often seen lying drunk on the streets. Drunk driving has resulted in many fatalities, with not just the drivers but others losing their lives too.

MLA Pabitra Sounta stated that despite raising questions in the Assembly, writing to the concerned department and district administration for liquor ban in the Lakshmipur constituency, no action has been taken by the government. A few days ago, the MLA, along with his supporters, locked up a liquor shop in protest.

He also alleged that liquor shop owners were being asked to pay a monthly donation (extortion money) by local groups, and when they refused, the shops were forcibly locked. Complaints regarding this matter had also been submitted to the District Collector.

MLA Pabitra Sounta denied these allegations in the press meet and presented all necessary proof and documents to support his claims. He and the MP jointly stated that the issue would be discussed directly with the District Collector for necessary action.
