Lack of Safe Drinking Water Forces Villagers to Rely on Floodwater

Ali, 9th Aug 2025: For many years, the residents of Gopalpur village under Narendrapur panchayat in the Ali police station limits have been facing a severe drinking water crisis.

The tube wells in the village, which were once the primary source of drinking water, are now either non-functional or release contaminated water mixed with iron and mud. As a result, villagers are forced to consume polluted water, which has led to a rise in stomach-related illnesses.

Gopalpur village is home to about 1,000 people. During the flood season, the entire village gets submerged by floodwater. Locals are compelled to walk long distances to fetch drinking water, causing great inconvenience, especially during emergencies.

In desperation, they have now resorted to using the water of the Brahmani River for daily consumption, including drinking.

The issue of clean drinking water has persisted for years. Despite repeated complaints made by villagers to the administration, no proper water supply system has been arranged in the village till now.

Although under the Basudha Yojana, pipelines were supposed to bring drinking water to the area — and poles were even installed in the village — the supply system remains non-functional to this day.

The villagers have warned that if the government fails to provide clean drinking water to Gopalpur soon, they will be forced to take to the streets in protest.
