Jeypore, 13th Sept 2025: A Rogi Kalyan Samiti general body meeting was held at the Koraput District Headquarters Hospital in Jeypore, presided over by Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka. Present at the meeting were Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Koraput MLA Raghuram Machha, Pottangi MLA Ramchandra Kadam, Laxmipur MLA Pabitra Sounta, District Collector Manoj Satyanand Mahajan, Jeypore Sub-Collector Akabharam Shashya Reji, CDMO Ravi Mishra, DMO Dilip Bishwal, and other officials.
The meeting focused on budget allocations and shortcomings in infrastructure at the district hospital. A state of emergency-like concern arose during the discussions due to the alarming number of issues faced by the hospital.
Key Issues Highlighted:
Only 48 doctors are serving out of the sanctioned 158 posts.
Despite being a 350-bed hospital, there is insufficient bed space, forcing patients to lie on the floor for treatment.
Beds from the COVID hospital are being reused to accommodate patients.
Severe water leakage in the newly constructed 7-storey hospital building has created flood-like conditions on the 3rd and 4th floors.
Out of 6 installed lifts, only 2 are functional; the remaining 4 are non-operational.
Water is leaking into the doctors’ quarters, resulting in complaints and reluctance of doctors to stay.
There is a need to dig 2 new borewells in the hospital premises.
Outposts are incomplete, and critical equipment like CT Scan, MRI, and Endoscopy machines are not available, depriving patients of essential diagnostics.
Six LED TVs, planned for the hospital, are yet to be installed.
The mortuary lacks a battery-operated vehicle to transport dead bodies.
No solar lighting system has been installed in the campus.
The ICU cannot function properly due to a lack of specialist doctors.
Live support ambulances are inactive due to a shortage of trained staff.
Frequent voltage fluctuations are damaging machines.
Officials Respond:
Koraput MLA Raghuram Machha expressed deep concern about the condition of the hospital.
District Collector Mr. Mahajan stated that the administration will coordinate with the State Government to bring in CT scan and other essential machines quickly and resolve many of the issues. He added that over two-thirds of doctor posts remain vacant.
Previously, 25% of patients were referred to other hospitals. This has now reduced to 18%, and efforts are being made to further bring down referral rates. A list is being prepared to track which doctors are referring patients unnecessarily, and action will be taken, according to Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
MP Saptagiri Ulaka added that questions would be raised in Parliament regarding the healthcare crisis in the region. He directed that immediate repair work be undertaken on the new hospital building and doctors’ quarters where water is leaking. Furthermore, it was decided that no payment would be made to the contractor unless all issues are resolved.
