Koraput, 5th Nov 2025: The Koraput bus stand, currently in a dilapidated state, is set to be completely redeveloped. After bricks started falling from the upper floor, the top portion of the existing building was demolished for safety reasons. The ground floor now lacks even basic amenities for passengers. From morning till 11 p.m., the bus stand remains overcrowded with thousands of commuters depending on it daily.

There has been a long-standing demand for the construction of a new bus terminal in Koraput to improve passenger facilities. Until now, the project had remained confined to surveys and cost estimations. However, on Monday, a meeting chaired by District Collector Manoj Satyaban Mahajan was held to discuss the new construction plan. Officials from the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), Koraput Municipality, and the Police Housing Board attended the meeting.

According to Koraput Municipality Chairperson Lalat Ranjan Sethi, OSRTC presented a preliminary plan for the new bus stand. As per the plan, the old bus stand and the nearby stalls will be demolished, and a new four-storey building will be constructed over 3.64 acres of land.

The proposed complex will include all modern passenger amenities, with separate entry and exit gates. Inside the terminal, there will be shops, a Mission Shakti café, a drivers’ rest room, and an OSRTC office. Special facilities will be provided for female passengers, along with modern restrooms and other improved infrastructure.

After the finalization of cost estimates, OSRTC will invite tenders for the project, while the Police Housing Board will take charge of the construction work, said Sethi.

Since the local MLA was absent from this initial meeting, officials stated that another meeting will be convened once the MLA is present to finalize the decisions. District Collector Mahajan clarified that this was only a preliminary discussion, and the final decision will be made in the upcoming meeting.
