New Delhi,12th Nov 2025: Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He will take charge on November 24, 2025, succeeding the current Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, who will retire on November 23. The tenure of the new Chief Justice will continue until February 9, 2027.
Justice Surya Kant’s appointment follows the recommendation of CJI Gavai. The Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced, “Under the powers granted by the Indian Constitution, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has appointed Justice Surya Kant as Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, 2025.” The Law Minister also extended his congratulations and best wishes to the new CJI.
Born in Haryana, Justice Kant has served as a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in May 2019. He is known for delivering important judgments related to governance, environmental protection, constitutional questions, and social justice.
During his tenure as CJI, Justice Surya Kant is expected to address issues related to electoral reforms, criminal justice system reforms, and digital privacy, among other important matters.
