Nabarangpur, 26th Sept 2025: The Odisha government’s Women and Child Welfare Department has initiated the appointment process for the Child Welfare Committee for the next three years. The committee will consist of one chairperson and four members. Applicants from Nabarangpur district who are educated and experienced in child welfare and protection fields will be considered for appointment according to the rules. However, some applicants from outside the district have already been appointed to this position.
Many of these appointed officials often do not attend the government institution regularly or perform their duties sincerely, yet they receive government salaries. Consequently, the objective of this institution has been undermined, as reflected in a memorandum.
According to Section 31 of the current law, the committee holds the ultimate authority to ensure the care, protection, medical treatment, development, rehabilitation, and arrangements for children. However, as per the memorandum, due to the presence of many tribal populations in Nabarangpur district and the fact that outsiders appointed lack knowledge of the local language and conditions, they are not suitable to work effectively in this area.
For the positions of one chairperson and four members, a total of 27 applicants have applied, including two from Cuttack district, one each from Bargarh, Dhenkanal, Khordha, Kandhamal districts, and three from Koraput district. Eighteen applicants are from Nabarangpur district itself.
During the local festival “Mandei” in Nabarangpur district, the Chief Minister had announced the appointment of district-level officials. The memorandum requests that these appointments be made at the district level. The memorandum has been submitted through District Collector Dr. Maheswar Swain to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Prabhati Parida.
Jagannath Mahapatra, the committee chairman, has urged that appointments be made only at the district level for Nabarangpur. Additionally, Nabarangpur MLA Gauri Shankar Majhi has been informed about the matter. Memorandums have also been submitted to Member of Parliament Balabhadra Majhi and key secretaries of the Odisha government, according to editor Ram Prasad Patra.
During discussions and submission of the memorandum, the committee chairman Jagannath Mahapatra, editor Ram Prasad Patra, assistant convener Pradeep Kumar Sahu, Barnalata Pattnayak, lawyer Kishori Pattnayak, Srinibas Patra, and other notable district officials discussed the matter and submitted the memorandum.
