India Launches First Indigenous Semiconductor Chips; PM Modi Receives First Set

New Delhi, 5th Sept 2025:  India has reached a historic milestone in its semiconductor journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the first Made-in-India semiconductor chip set from Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw at the launch of Semicon India held at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Delhi on Tuesday.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister remarked:

> “Today, the entire world has faith in India. The world is ready to build the future of semiconductors together with India. Soon, the tiniest chip made in India will bring the biggest transformation globally.”

Referring indirectly to tariffs imposed during Donald Trump’s presidency, PM Modi added:

> “While global economies are facing uncertainty and challenges due to economic self-interest, India’s GDP still grew by 7.8% in the first quarter of this year. This growth is visible across production, services, agriculture, and manufacturing.”

He emphasized:

> “India is progressing from being a back-end hub to becoming a full-stack semiconductor nation. The day is not far when ‘Design in India’ and ‘Made in India’ will define the identity of our future.”

Modi further stated:

> “Earlier, oil was considered the ‘black gold’ of the world. But now, in the digital age, semiconductor chips are the ‘digital diamonds’. While oil wells determined the future in the 20th century, in the 21st century, the power lies in a tiny chip that can accelerate global development.”

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s Remarks:

India’s Semiconductor Mission, launched in December 2021, reached the production stage within just 3.5 years — from approval to manufacturing.

He credited this achievement to the vision, determination, and decisive leadership of PM Modi.

He said India is now turning into a beacon of stability, with not just GDP growth but also a growing semiconductor ecosystem powered by this first indigenous chip.

Vaishnaw emphasized the mission’s foundation is built on:

Respecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR),

Supporting supply chain development,

Promoting co-development models with global stakeholders.

Semicon India 2025 & MoUs Signed:

At the Semicon India 2025 event, 12 MoUs (Memoranda of Understanding) were announced. These focus on:

Enhancing product development,

Expanding service capabilities, and

Strengthening skill development to build a self-reliant and future-ready semiconductor ecosystem in India.

Key Announcements and Initiatives:

Deep Tech Ment: Vaishnaw announced the formation of a Deep Tech Investment Fund with $1 billion in funding to support innovation in:

Semiconductors,

Clean energy,

Biotechnology,

Quantum computing,

Space technology.

> This will offer crucial venture capital support for emerging deep tech industries in India.

India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0:

Following the success of ISM 1.0, the government is preparing to launch ISM 2.0, which will:

Cover the entire semiconductor value chain,

Support fabs, OSAT units, capital equipment, and materials.

Vaishnaw noted that among the 10 approved semiconductor projects, exports will be a major component.
He claimed that chips made in India will serve both domestic and global markets, with independent studies showing India could be 15-30% more competitive in semiconductor manufacturing compared to other nations.

India’s Talent and Innovation:

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw handed over to PM Modi 20 chip designs developed by Indian students at the Semiconductor Chip Laboratory (SCL).

78 Indian universities are now using advanced EDA tools, creating a deep talent pool in semiconductor design and development.
