IMD Warns of Intense Rainfall in Northern and Western Odisha

Bhubaneswar, 18th July 2025: A well-marked low-pressure area that had formed over the southeast Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coast has now intensified into a depression. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is likely to move west-northwestward in the next 24 hours. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in northern and western Odisha over the next two days.

The IMD forecast mentions that on Tuesday, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, for which an Orange Warning has been issued. Additionally, Balasore and Bhadrak may also receive significant rainfall.

Depression Formed – Emergency Meeting by Revenue Minister

Districts like Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, and Nuapada are likely to receive heavy rainfall, while Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur may witness thunderstorms with rain. Experts have warned that continuous heavy rainfall could lead to potential flooding.

To prepare for any adverse situation, the state government has already initiated disaster preparedness. Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari held a virtual emergency meeting with the collectors of Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh from the Rajiv Bhawan emergency conference hall. He instructed district administrations to remain on 24-hour alert and ensure advance preparedness.

According to the IMD’s forecast, on July 16, heavy rainfall may occur in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur. Thunderstorms with rainfall are expected in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Mayurbhanj.

On July 17, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj may again witness very heavy rainfall. Various interior regions of Odisha are also likely to receive intense showers, the IMD has warned.

From Monday morning to evening, the following rainfall measurements were recorded:

Rourkela: 20.9 mm

Bhawanipatna: 20.8 mm

Talcher: 16.4 mm

Sundargarh: 13.8 mm

Malkangiri: 12.6 mm

Dhenkanal: 12.4 mm

Angul: 11 mm

Baripada: 10.2 mm

Chandbali: 5.4 mm
