Cuttack, 17th July 2025- Jyotiprakash Biswal, one of the three students who risked their lives to save Soumyashree Bisi during her self-immolation attempt at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore, is currently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He sustained serious burn injuries while trying to extinguish the flames on Soumyashree’s body.
Doctors have stated that around 15Percent of his body has been burnt. The fire affected parts of his back, face, and chest, which may have impacted his airways and lungs, raising concerns of possible pulmonary infection. To prevent such complications, Jyotiprakash has been admitted to the Burns Unit ICU under the Department of Plastic Surgery.
A dedicated medical team is treating him with utmost care to prevent any infection. Regular health monitoring is being conducted by doctors and staff, and dressing is being done under strict infection-control protocols. Jyotiprakash and his family have expressed satisfaction over the treatment being provided.
Meanwhile, after receiving news of Soumyashree’s death, Jyotiprakash’s family members who had been staying at the hospital since last night were deeply shattered. According to them, Jyotiprakash was also an active member of ABVP like Soumyashree. They said he showed immense courage by risking his own life to save her from the raging fire. “We would have been happy if the girl had survived. Her passing has caused us deep pain,” said his family.
However, it is not yet confirmed whether Jyotiprakash is aware of Soumyashree’s death. Doctors have informed that his condition is currently stable. Given the sensitivity of the incident, security in the Burns ICU has been tightened. Strict restrictions have been imposed on access to the ICU where Jyotiprakash is admitted. His father Sanatan Biswal, mother, and other family members are waiting outside.
According to hospital sources, Jyotiprakash has been receiving treatment at SCB Medical’s Plastic Surgery Burns Unit since the day of the self-immolation incident involving Soumyashree at FM College.
