Kotpad 24th January 2025 Boxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhara Mohapatra Bhramarbara Rai, widely known as Boxi Jagabandhu, was a legendary freedom fighter and a prominent leader of Odisha’s first organized resistance against British colonial rule. He was born into a feudal family in the Khurda region in the late 18th century and held the title of “Buxi,” meaning commander of the King of Khurda’s army.
Boxi Jagabandhu is best remembered for leading the Paika Rebellion (Paika Vidroha) of 1817, which is considered one of the earliest armed uprisings against British rule in India. The Paikas, a warrior class of Odisha, revolted against oppressive British policies, high taxation, and the seizure of land. Under Buxi Jagabandhu’s leadership, the Paikas attacked British establishments, burnt government offices, and inspired widespread resistance.
Though the rebellion was eventually suppressed by the British, it had a significant impact and demonstrated the spirit of resistance among the people of Odisha. Buxi Jagabandhu later went into hiding and continued to resist British authority until his arrest.
Boxi Jagabandhu’s legacy lives on as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the fight for justice. His leadership in the Paika Rebellion paved the way for subsequent struggles for India’s independence. He is fondly remembered in Odisha and across India as a true patriot who devoted his life to the cause of freedom.
