Jeypore: The demand for setting up an AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) hospital in Jeypore has intensified. In the tribal-dominated Koraput district, the healthcare system has deteriorated. Though hospitals exist, repeated complaints have been raised that patients are unable to receive proper medical care.

Keeping this in mind, the government has arranged for doctors from Malkangiri district to provide services via air ambulance. However, patients from undivided Koraput district have still not benefitted significantly.

Since February 2020, there has been a consistent demand for establishing a high-quality medical facility to serve the poor tribal population of undivided Koraput. Although both the state and central governments have been considering the matter, no concrete announcement has been made yet.

With each passing day, the lack of doctors in Jeypore District Hospital and the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput is resulting in patients not getting adequate treatment. If an AIIMS hospital is established in Jeypore, it would benefit not only the undivided Koraput region but also the poor populations of neighboring areas like Kalahandi and Chhattisgarh.

Previously, the Swabhimani Manch of Jeypore had raised this demand, stating that Jeypore already has an airport, making access easier for doctors and super specialists. It would also facilitate quick transfer of patients and benefit the entire region.

Over the last five years, the Manch has submitted memoranda to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Governor Ganeshi Lal, the Chief Secretary, and several senior ministers and officials. Now, the Swabhimani Manch has once again reiterated its demand.

Kiran Mishra, Secretary of the Swabhimani Manch, stated that due to the presence of an airport in Jeypore, there would be no difficulty in the arrival of doctors and specialists. Local patients could be transferred quickly in emergencies. The Manch is preparing once again to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Health Minister, and Chief Secretary.
