Government Releases Official 2026 Holiday Calendar: 29 Holidays Announced

Bhubaneswar, 14th Nov 2025:  The Odisha State Government has released the official holiday calendar for the year 2026. According to the notification, state government employees will get a total of 29 public holidays, 9 optional holidays, and may avail one additional optional holiday of their choice. However, 6 of these holidays fall on Sundays or second Saturdays.

According to a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on Tuesday, the 2026 holiday calendar will be applicable to all government offices and revenue/magistrate courts. The list of 29 public holidays begins with Makar Sankranti and ends with Christmas Day.

Notably, for Nuakhai — falling on September 15 — the government has declared two consecutive holidays (15th and 16th September). Apart from these, employees may choose one day from the list of nine optional holidays.

The nine optional holidays include:

  • Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti
  • Shab-e-Qadr
  • Easter Saturday
  • Raja Ram Mohan Roy Jayanti
  • Bahuda Yatra
  • Brahmo Samaj Foundation Day
  • Anla Navami
  • Prathamastami
  • December 24 (Christmas Eve)
  • Employees may opt for any one of these as a discretionary holiday.

Among the six public holidays that fall on Sundays or second Saturdays are Maha Shivaratri, Pahili Raja, Mahalaya, Maha Ashtami, Kumar Purnima, and Diwali.

  • January 26: Republic Day
  • March 4: Holi
  • March 21: Id-ul-Fitr
  • March 27: Ram Navami
  • April 1: Utkal Divas
  • April 9: Good Friday
  • April 14: Maha Vishuba Sankranti / Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti
  • May 1: Murmu Jayanti
  • May 16: Savitri Amavasya
  • May 27: Id-ul-Zuha
  • June 15: Raja Sankranti
  • June 26: Muharram
  • July 16: Ratha Yatra
  • August 15: Independence Day
  • August 26: Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday
  • August 27: Jhulan Purnima
  • September 4: Janmashtami
  • September 14: Ganesh Puja
  • September 15–16: Nuakhai
  • October 2: Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 17: Maha Saptami
  • October 19: Maha Navami
  • October 20: Vijaya Dashami
  • October 24: Rahas Purnima
  • December 25: Christmas Day

Additionally, six major festivals — including Buddha Purnima and Pandit Raghunath Murmu Jayanti — fall on Sundays or second Saturdays in 2026.
