Government Hikes Private Vehicle Rent for Officials Across Departments

Bhubaneswar: The Finance Department has revised the monthly allowance for hiring private vehicles by government officials, ranging from Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Tahsildars to IAS officers and ministers. The monthly rent for such vehicles has now been increased, starting from ₹4,000 and going up to ₹8,400, depending on the post and the category of vehicle used. Additionally, the eligible type of vehicle (based on mileage and features) for different officials has also been specified.

Now, top-level officials such as Additional Chief Secretaries, Chief Secretaries, and those in the Apex Pay Scale, who earlier received ₹42,000, will now be eligible for ₹50,400. Similarly, ministers using private vehicles for official purposes will also receive ₹50,400 per month—up from ₹42,000 earlier.

For institutions like 32-seater government colleges, universities, and training institutes, vehicle hire allowances have been fixed at ₹90,000 for large buses, ₹71,500 for 25-seaters, and ₹58,500 for 15-seater vehicles.

It has also been specified that vehicles used for government work must not be older than 7 years. During the tendering process, vehicles should not be more than 3 years old. Additionally, these vehicles cannot be used for any private purpose, whether on holidays or regular working days. Departmental heads can travel up to a maximum of 2,500 km per month.

Officers who have not been allotted a government vehicle but use their personal vehicles for official duties can now claim usage up to 2,000 km per month. Any travel exceeding 20% of the permissible limit requires prior administrative approval.
