Government Allocates Rs5,936 Crore to Accelerate Polavaram Project

Bhubaneswar: The interests of Odisha and its people seem to hold little significance for the Central Government. This has been proven in the past with numerous examples. It was hoped that with the arrival of the “double-engine government,” the Central Government’s approach towards Odisha would change. However, Odisha’s interests continue to be neglected just as they were before.

Despite strong opposition and concerns from Odisha, the Central Government has allocated ₹5,936 crore for the Polavaram Project to the Andhra Pradesh Government in the 2025–26 budget, sparking sharp reactions within the state.

Just six months ago, the Central Government had provided ₹12,157 crore in financial assistance to Andhra Pradesh for the same project in the 2024–25 fiscal budget, which also faced significant opposition in Odisha. Political parties, starting from the main opposition party BJD to various social organizations, had protested against this move.

Although there were plans to complete the project within a specific timeframe, the Central Government’s continued support to Andhra Pradesh, while overlooking Odisha’s objections, has drawn heavy criticism. The silent stance of Odisha’s own “double-engine government” amid such developments has further fueled public dissatisfaction.
