New Delhi: 7th Nov 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The Commission is expected to submit its recommendations within 18 months.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Prime Minister has approved the rules and terms of reference for the Pay Commission. According to him, around 50 lakh (5 million) central government employees will benefit from the Commission’s recommendations. In addition, approximately 6.9 lakh defense pensioners are also expected to benefit.
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the Chairperson of the 8th Pay Commission. Other members include Professor Pulak Ghosh from IIM Bangalore and Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Minister Vaishnaw also mentioned that the government had given preliminary approval for the 8th Pay Commission in January, and it has been constituted in a remarkably short time. The process involved extensive consultations with several ministries such as Defence, Home Affairs, and Railways, which have a large number of employees. After these consultations, the terms of reference for the Commission were finalized.
