Prayagraj: At the Maha Kumbh, more than 58 crore devotees have taken a holy dip so far. Yet, the purity of Ganga water remains unaffected. Padma Shri awardee scientist Dr. Alok Kumar Sonkar has proven this through his laboratory experiments. He stated that Ganga water is not just fit for bathing but is as pure as alkaline water. Many have questioned the purity of Ganga water, but he has scientifically debunked these doubts through his experiments.
His findings confirm that even after millions of devotees bathe, there is no bacterial growth in the water, nor does its pH level drop.
From his research, Sonkar discovered that Ganga water contains 1,100 types of bacteriophages—microorganisms that destroy harmful bacteria. This explains why even after 58 crore devotees have bathed, the water remains uncontaminated.
Some organizations and individuals have released misleading reports questioning the purity of Ganga water, claiming that it is unfit for consumption or bathing. However, Sonkar’s study completely disproves such claims.
To challenge these doubts, Sonkar has invited skeptics to personally test Ganga water in his presence. He has collected water samples from five different ghats, including Sangam and Arail, and found that the water has a slightly alkaline nature, no foul smell, and no bacterial growth. Laboratory tests show that the pH level of Ganga water ranges between 8.4 and 8.6, which is considered excellent.
