Koraput, 15th Oct 2025: The Galigabdar waterfall, popularly known as Rathibali waterfall in Pottangi block, is turning into a death trap. Over the past 10 years, 67 lives have been lost here. Poor roads, slippery rocks, unsafe bathing spots, and lack of safety measures are leading to avoidable deaths. Despite so many incidents, the district administration remains unresponsive, and the tourism department is indifferent. Even as the tourist season approaches, no preventive measures are being taken by the authorities.
Located around 11 km from Pottangi Subdivision Headquarters, the waterfall can be reached via the winding Eastern Ghats route. Water cascades from a height onto mossy rocks below, creating a stunning view. Tourists visit this place throughout the year.

Administration remains silent, tourism department continues carelessly
No security personnel deployed
Lack of awareness is increasing accidents
Many tourists have died either by drowning or falling from the rocks. According to police data, 67 tourist deaths have been reported in the last decade due to various reasons. As the site lacks informative signage or safety instructions, most of the victims are from outside the area and unaware of the risks.
Local Concerns Rising with Tourist Season Ahead
Locals say that with the upcoming tourist season, crowds will gather at Galigabdar for picnics and bathing in the waterfall. Although the number of visitors increases every year, the administration has failed to implement necessary safety measures. Tourists from within and outside the state come to enjoy the waterfall, especially in winter, but due to lack of facilities and safety arrangements, even a small mistake can turn fatal.
