New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday for a two-day visit. On the first day, he met with Mauritian President Dharam Gokhool.
Honored with the Highest Civilian Award
Modi presented Ganga water to the President and a Banarasi saree to his wife as gifts. On this occasion, Mauritius’ highest civilian award was conferred on Modi. Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced this honor. During the event, Modi also addressed the Indian diaspora, beginning his speech in Bhojpuri.
Modi recalled, “Ten years ago, on this very date, I had visited Mauritius. Back then, Holi had just passed by a week, and I had come here carrying the enthusiasm of India’s Holi celebrations. This time, it’s the other way around. In a few days, India will celebrate Holi, and I will return from Mauritius carrying the colors of Holi.”
He also mentioned that “Gujiya,” a traditional Holi sweet, has a deep connection with Mauritius. Sugar from Mauritius was once exported to western India for making sweets, and this is why sugar is called “Moris” in Gujarati. Modi emphasized that the sweet relationship between India and Mauritius continues to grow over time.
Modi’s Gratitude to Mauritius
Expressing his gratitude, Modi said, “You have honored me, and I humbly accept this honor as a symbol of India-Mauritius’ historical relations. I extend my appreciation to every citizen and the government of Mauritius for this recognition.”
He recalled that last year, India’s President was the chief guest at Mauritius’ National Day, showcasing the strong ties between the two nations. March 12 is observed as National Day in Mauritius, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi’s launch of the Dandi March against colonial rule.
