Jeypore, 22nd Oct 2025: The Dandi Yatra or Salt Satyagraha project has entered its final phase in Jeypore. A total of 11 statues, including that of Mahatma Gandhi, have been installed at Gandhi Chhak. However, the surrounding development work remains incomplete, according to municipal engineer Ajay Kumar Jani.
As per Mr. Jani, the Salt Satyagraha tableau is being constructed along the banks of the Kolab main canal near Gandhi Chhak. After the installation of life-size statues (4 to 6 feet high) of 11 great personalities, the area has been fenced with railing. The statues are made of FRC (Fibre Reinforced Concrete).
The surrounding development includes:
Platform construction
Paver blocks
Bright lighting
Cement benches for seating
These works are ongoing and the contractor has been instructed to complete everything within a week. The total project cost is estimated at ₹15 lakh.
Earlier in June, illegal encroachments from Gandhi Chhak to Champakuli Cremation Road along the Kolab main canal were cleared by the municipal administration. The idea of setting up Dandi March statues was conceived as part of beautification and urban development in the area. Work began after the tender process was completed.
While many have appreciated the initiative taken by the administration, some have criticized it. Allegations have been made that the administration, after removing illegal street vendors, has itself encroached on public space. Critics say installing statues in such a crowded and important area like Gandhi Chhak might invite congestion.
Furthermore, while encroachments on the western side of Champakuli Road remain, no action has been taken against them. Officials are accused of avoiding action against big land grabbers while targeting the poor, which has sparked criticism. Some consider it laughable that the poor were evicted just so the administration could take credit for beautification.
