Fertilizer Shortage Sparks Farmer Unrest, Stones Pelted

Nabarangpur, 18th Aug 2025: A shortage of fertilizer has been continuing in Kosagumuda block of Nabarangpur district. On Saturday, during the fertilizer distribution, an unpleasant situation arose. Amidst the jostling for fertilizer, two women fell ill and were admitted to the hospital. Frustrated farmers standing in the queue resorted to pelting stones at the office premises. Fertilizer distribution was carried out in the presence of Additional SP Aditya Sen, Papadahandi SDPO Satyajit Kandakel, Kodigaon Additional Tahsildar Ashok Muduli, Kodigaon IIC Jugal Sabar, Kosagumuda IIC Umesh Nayak, and one platoon of police force.

According to reports, farmers had queued up in long lines in front of the LAMPS since Saturday morning to obtain fertilizer. After the police arrived, distribution started at 10:30 a.m.

A large crowd of farmers had gathered in front of the LAMPS for fertilizer. Farmers had to stand in long queues the whole day just to get one sack of fertilizer. Distribution was limited to two sacks per Aadhaar card.

Farmers alleged that earlier the LAMPS had sufficient fertilizer stock, but it was supplied to influential persons. Now that only a small quantity remains, it is being distributed to farmers in one or two sacks each, leaving small farmers deprived.

Kosagumuda LAMPS had received 2,215 packets of fertilizer, but by Saturday the entire stock had been exhausted, according to Cooperative Society Manager Pranab Mohanty. During distribution, angry farmers pelted stones at the office premises.

Those who could not receive fertilizer on Saturday were issued tokens. Officials informed that once the fresh stock arrives on Monday or Tuesday, fertilizer will be given to them upon showing the token.
