Bhubaneswar: FCI will procure an additional 20 lakh metric tons of paddy. The government has purchased 74 lakh metric tons of paddy this year, which is 26 lakh metric tons more than last year.
Replying in the Assembly, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra stated that FCI usually takes 16 lakh metric tons of rice each year, but this time, they have agreed to take an additional 20 lakh metric tons of paddy. This means that FCI will procure a total of 46 lakh metric tons of rice this year.
However, even after this, 15 lakh metric tons of rice will remain as surplus. Therefore, arrangements are being made to store 10 lakh metric tons of rice in warehouses, and the surplus rice will also be sold through free sale, the minister said.
