Chandahandi,15th Oct 2025:  In Chandahandi block of Nabarangpur district, continuous rainfall under the influence of a low-pressure system has led to extensive crop damage. Farmers have complained that maize and paddy crops grown over acres of farmland have been severely affected.

Due to heavy rains and strong winds, paddy plants have fallen, and fields remain waterlogged. Similarly, maize crops have also reportedly suffered major losses. In some areas, harvested paddy kept in the fields has rotted after getting soaked in water. Farmers who took loans for cultivation are now worried about how they will repay them.

Farmers are demanding immediate assessment of crop loss and compensation. However, during this crucial agricultural season, the block does not have a permanent Block Agriculture Officer (BAO) for over two months now. Raighar BAO Rashmikant Sahu is currently handling Chandahandi’s agricultural responsibilities as an additional charge.

Given the importance of agriculture, one officer handling two separate blocks cannot devote enough time or attention to either. This has led to growing dissatisfaction among locals. There is increasing demand for the district administration to take immediate action, appoint a permanent BAO for Chandahandi, and carry out a proper damage assessment to provide timely compensation to affected farmers.
