Farmers Demand Canal Water Supply in Umerkote, Submit Memorandum

Umerkote, 20th Aug 2025: Despite having check dams and fertile lands, farmers of several villages in Umerkote block remain deprived of irrigation facilities. Hundreds of farmers have submitted a memorandum to the Umerkote Minor Irrigation Officer demanding water supply from the Singari Check Dam through the canal system.

According to reports, earlier villages like Jaragaon, Laharguda, Malkiguda, Saitiguda, Durjiguda, Jiraguda, Tumarguda, Bagdabetta, Riajaguda, Turinji, and others under Yumeno panchayat used to receive irrigation water through this canal. However, for the past few years, due to lack of maintenance, water has not been reaching the agricultural fields.

Additionally, some influential individuals have installed motors in the canal to divert water to their own fields, resulting in the lower-end farmlands being deprived of water.

In protest, hundreds of farmers marched to the Minor Irrigation Office in Umerkote and submitted a memorandum, urging the authorities to resolve their problem on a war footing. Copies of the memorandum were also submitted to the District Collector and the Tahasildar of Umerkote Jharigaon.

Among those present during the submission were Bishwambar Itra, Jayaram Panaka, Sadhuram Indra, Khagu Gouda, Narasingh Itra, Gautam Gouda, Prashant Palaka, along with hundreds of farmers.
