Family Accuses Health Worker of Taking Away Newborn in Malkangiri

Malkangiri |18th Sept 2025:  A shocking allegation has surfaced against the Malkangiri District Health Center, where a health worker allegedly took away a newborn for treatment and never returned the baby. When the family questioned the whereabouts of the child, they were reportedly told the baby had died. Additionally, the mother was allegedly discharged from the hospital under pressure, and the family was threatened.

According to the complaint, Lachu Kabasi of Komarpalli village under Mathili block, had admitted his pregnant wife Adme Padiami to the Malkangiri District Health Center when she went into labor. On July 18, in the afternoon, Adme gave birth to a baby girl. Shortly after, some women (health workers) took the baby away, claiming it was for medical treatment.

However, after that, no information was provided about the baby. Once Adme recovered, when the family asked about the child, the health workers said the baby had died. When they demanded to see the body, the family was threatened and Adme was forcibly discharged from the hospital.

Now, two months after the incident, the family has submitted a written complaint through the Mathili Community Health Center officials to the District Health Officer, demanding a thorough investigation.

When contacted, Dr. Brajabandhu Das, the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), said:

> “This is a very sensitive matter. If the family has submitted a written complaint, we will definitely conduct an investigation and take necessary action.”
