Nabarangpur : Today, a district-level meeting of the Natural Disaster (Flood) Management Committee was held in Nabarangpur under the chairmanship of District Collector Dr. Shubhankar Mahapatra. The meeting was attended by Odisha Government Minister for School & Mass Education, Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare, and Social Security — Hon’ble Nityananda Gond, Nabarangpur MLA Gauri Shankar Majhi, Dabugaon MLA Manohar Randhari, Lok Sabha MP Representative Prahlad Tripathy, Jharigaon MLA Representative Manas Ranjan Das, Nabarangpur Municipality Chairperson Kunu Nayak, Additional District Magistrate Tapan Kumar Khuntia, Chief Development Officer and Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad Biranchi Narayan Darobaan, Deputy Collector Prakash Chandra Mishra, Emergency Officer Gitanjali Behera, District Project Officer of Emergency Department Himanshu Shekhar Pattnaik, and all district-level officers, group development officers, tehsildars, executive officers, and representatives from urban institutions of Nabarangpur and Umerkote.

Hon’ble Minister Nityananda Gond emphasized that effective coordination among departments during disasters ensures collective and successful management. Special attention was given to flood preparedness during the rainy season. The District Collector instructed concerned departmental officers to promptly repair and maintain damaged river embankments in the district. Adequate stock of rice, flattened rice (chuda), kerosene, jaggery, drinking water, and health-related essentials was emphasized.

Advisories were issued to ensure preparedness in health infrastructure to prevent outbreaks in flood-affected areas. The Chief District Medical Officer and other departmental officers present were advised to stock essential medicines including anti-venom injections, halogen tablets, ORS, and other critical supplies.

The discussion included arrangements for safely evacuating affected people to shelter homes, maintaining connectivity, food and water supply, child food, medicines, lighting, setting up control centers, and ensuring the safety of women, children, differently-abled persons, and the elderly. Pre-monsoon repair of embankments, urban drain cleaning, supply of purified drinking water through pipes, well disinfection, storage of essential items in remote areas, and prompt removal of roadblocks during disasters were also covered.

Post-flood actions such as road cleaning, repair of fallen electric poles, and overall restoration work were advised to be undertaken swiftly. Officers were also directed to send accurate situational reports to the emergency division within the prescribed timeline. On this occasion, the 2025 District Natural Disaster Management Draft Book was officially released by the Hon’ble Minister and other dignitaries.
