Malkangiri: A training camp for fish farmers of Malkangiri district was held at Sindhimala Panchayat under Malkangiri block. Participating in the camp were District Fisheries Officer Sushanta Kumar Mar Gauda, Assistant Fisheries Officers Mukesh Majhi and Itishree Das, Cooperative Society Director Sangram Biswas, Junior Fisheries Assistant Mihirkant Singh, Dr. Tudu, Lalita Tripathy, and the MP representative D. Bhanga Padiaami, among others.
They provided training on how to undertake advanced and modern fish farming techniques. Information was also shared about various government schemes for fish farming. It was stated that Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe fish farmers are eligible for a 50% subsidy, while general category farmers can receive a 40% subsidy.
This financial assistance can be used by farmers to:
Construct new ponds
Renovate and upgrade old ponds
Purchase improved fish seeds and nutrient-rich feed
Ensure water purification and use of medicines for disease prevention
Buy nets and boats for fishing
Procure life jackets and related safety gear
Training was also given on how to sell fish through societies or cooperatives. It was explained that after receiving the training, farmers can engage in fish farming in their own ponds and earn over ₹60,000 per hectare.
More than a hundred male and female fish farmers from various parts of the district participated in this training camp and received guidance on effective fish farming practices.
